Structure of the studies in Astronomy
The curriculum in Astronomy consists of basic, intermediate and advanced
studies. Most of the basic and intermediate studies are usually given in
finnish, and advanced (mainly those in astrophysics) in english. In addition to the studies
in the astronomy, students are recommended to take courses in
mathematics, physics and computer science (15-45 sw/22.5-67.5
ECTS).
The basic studies (15 sw/22.5 ECTS) give the necessary background information
in astronomy, needed in later studies. This section is also highly recommendable
for those students majoring for subject teachers in other departments or
lines.
The intermediate studies (21 sw/31.5 ECTS) consist of theoretical
concepts, methodologies and observations in various fields of astronomy. During these
studies, students are expected to familiarize themselves with the necessary
mathematics, physics and the concept of scientific work so that they are able to
choose their topics in the advanced studies.
The advanced studies (40 sw/60 ECTS) consist of lectures, often by
visitors, courses concentrating on showing how the astronomical
observations, data reduction and theoretical work is conducted, seminars and guided
research. The graduate (M.Sc.) thesis is 20 sw (30ECTS).
Examinations
Exams for each course is usually taken right after the course. Individual arrangements for the exams can be made with the
lecturer.
